It looks like winter is coming soon and we know what that means. That’s right, people, ski trip to Switzerland. The Swiss Alps are an ideal ski destination, with the most popular areas being the Valais, Graubünden and the Bernese Oberland.
Zermatt is a village in the Valais area, at the northern base of the Matterhorn. Despite the growth in popularity and the fact that it is one of the largest ski and ski resorts in the world, it is a small town. Zermatt is a car-free zone (apart from emergency and municipal vehicles) that provides fresh, pollutant-free air.
When skiing in Zermatt, you can choose from four different places: Schwarzsee, Klein Matterhorn, Gornergrat and Sunnegga. But skiing is not all it offers. There are so many things to do during off-piste weather. Zermatt has bars, nightclubs and restaurants to suit your preferences. (And of course, you can’t visit without trying the traditional fondue while you’re there.) Zermatt also offers great opportunities for photography enthusiasts, amateurs or professionals alike. From the Cerví to the wooden houses and chalets, every photograph you take will look like a postcard. The main promenade makes for a beautiful walk and the side streets are small cobbled streets, also perfect for a romantic walk. The peak of the Cerví dominates the village, so it is almost always in sight. Many people take a train from the cities hours ago, only to come and see the majestic beauty of this mountain peak.
German is the main language spoken in this region, although most places you visit also speak English. Like most cities in Europe, trying to speak the local language is always a welcome gesture; an answer is usually given that lets you know that the traveler speaks English.
Many hostels and hotel complexes are located throughout the village. Arriving in Zermatt, you can fly to Geneva or Zurich and catch the Swiss train to the city. The journey from Geneva is 4 hours and from Zurich about 5 hours. Swiss Rail trains are reliable, clean and fast. Your trip to Zermatt will be memorable, as you will be able to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Switzerland along the way.
